Calico Beans. Old Timer's Beans. It doesn't matter what they're called,
these are really much like Baked Beans. They're a really good side dish at barbeques or potlucks.
Old-Fashioned Beans
Ingredients:
2 pounds ground chuck or hamburger, browned and drained
4 slices thick cut bacon, chopped then browned and drained
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
3 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 medium onion, diced
1 bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 can red kidney beans, drained
1 can baby limas, drained
2 cans pork and beans
Directions:
Heat oven to 350°F. Brown meats and drain. Set aside.
Mix sugars, ketchup, barbeque sauce, mustard, chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper to make sauce and stir in beef and bacon. Stir in onion, bell pepper and beans. Pour mixture into a greased 2 1/2 quart baking dish.
Bake for 1 hour, uncovered, or in a slow cooker for 4 hours.
