Now that spring is here and warm weather approaches Central Ohio, it's time to think about getting the grill ready for the summer. Yay! Here's a unique approach to the usual Saturday Burger affair.
Mushroom and Swiss play a star role with a twist . . . potato. Stuffed inside onion flavored beef is a filling of mushroom, swiss and potato. It makes for an unexpected flavor combo. Try these on an onion bun along with your favorite toppings. I'll have extra Swiss, please.
Potato Surprise Burgers
Ingredients:
1 cup swiss cheese, shredded
1 cup chopped fresh mushrooms
1 cup shredded hash brown potatoes (thawed, if frozen)
2 lbs ground beef from chuck (80/20)
1 (1.4 oz) envelope dry onion soup mix
1 egg
2 tsp Montreal Steak seasoning
Directions:
Preheat grill for high heat (or start the coals).
In a medium bowl, mix together potato, cheese, and mushrooms. Divide into 6 (or 8) portions
In a large bowl, mix hamburger with onion soup mix, egg and seasoning. Form into 12 (16) thin patties. On 6 (8) of the patties, place a portion of the potato mix. Top with another patty and seal edges.
When ready to grill, brush grate with oil. Cook over high heat for 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Serve hot. Provide the usual condiments.
Makes 6 to 8 burgers.
Hmm, here's an idea . . . add 1/2 cup ground ham to the potato mixture and you've got Burger Cordon Bleu (with a twist).
